Fishing Regulations

Michigan Regulations

California has different Regulations for Ocean or Freshwater... crazy

Unfair and unsubstantiated

In the immense excitement and joy stemming from my only pseudo-successful fishing trip of my life, I apparently chose to pay less attention to the rules.

It wasn't explained explicitly in the rules or competition, but it was generally understood between the Fisher Kings and For The House that the fish we catch and submit for the competition should be of legal size.

I've had two or three people comment now that the 7 bass I caught looked like Largemouth Bass rather than the Hybrid Rock Bass I thought they were.

It's well known in all my social circles that the reality I see in battle usually tends to give me a competitive advantage. So I'm not surprised I talked myself into seeing a different type of fish rather than the Largemouth Bass I actually caught.

According to Michigan Fishing Guidelines, the minimum size of Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass that is legal to keep is 14". Although this minimum size regulation sucks and is completely unfair and unsubstantiated, it appears as though the fish I caught were illegal and therefore cannot be considered as eligible for this competition.
Special Thanks to Feeling Entropy for leaving the comment that burst the bubble of the finest fishing moment of my life. We'd like to wish you and Hong the best of luck on your upcoming fishing expedition.

But I will keep that blog post up because even though I was doing something illegal, it still felt oh so right.

7 Bass

I caught 7 Bass on an inland lake.

I used a Texas Rig with 1/8 oz. bullet sinker and a size 1 Offset Shank Worm hook with a plastic worm.

This rig does a couple things.
The sinker allows the worm to get to the bottom of the lake, but since the hook is so close to the body of the worm, it prevents it from snagging on weeds or debris on the bottom. Additionally, the size 1 hook deters smaller fish from being able to eat the bait. So you're not messing around with fish too small.

I caught 1 x 11.5", 5 x 11", 1 x 10.5" Bass.

The largest one weighed 1 pound, the 11" weighed 0.75lbs, the small one weighed 0.5lb.

This fish was eating another fish when I caught it.... I discovered the inner fish when I went to gut and scale it....

AFISHON!!!

9.7.09 Labor Day Fishing Lessons Learned

Dam Fishing – Lessons Learned
At night, go at peak moon phase fishing times give or take a half an hour.
Establish a home base with central lantern.
Hot dog bait works.
Have the different rigs ready to go before hand. Do all the necessary pre-work.
Always have mosquito repellant.

Backyard River Shore Fishing – Lessons Learned
Sunrise and sunset matter. You don’t need to get up at 5am if sunrise is at 7:15am. Check sunrise and sunset the night before.
Have a headlight or head LED.

Backyard River Boat Fishing – Lessons Learned
The boat is too heavy for just one person to take it from the house to the river.
It’s very heavy and the handles hurt your hands with two people carrying the front and the transom mounted with wheels.
